Bringing Professional Ice Sports into Everyday Life in Changsha
Ice sports have traditionally felt somewhat distant from everyday life in Changsha. The city’s climate and lack of natural ice conditions make year-round ice sports difficult without a dedicated indoor facility.
Located in the Yanghu area of Changsha, KS Super Ice Factory introduces a professional temperature-controlled ice rink designed to support ice hockey, figure skating, training, recreational activities and future sporting events.
The venue is currently in its trial operation phase, creating a new opportunity for local residents, families, young athletes and ice sports enthusiasts to experience professional ice sports within the city.
A Professional Temperature-Controlled Ice Rink for Multiple Sports Scenarios
KS Super Ice Factory is designed as more than a conventional recreational ice rink.
The venue supports a variety of potential operating scenarios, including:
- Ice hockey training and practice
- Figure skating
- Youth ice sports development
- Recreational skating
- Ice sports activities
- Competitions and events
- Community and family-oriented experiences
Different activities place different demands on the visual environment.
For a professional ice sports venue, lighting therefore needs to provide more than sufficient brightness. The system must also consider illuminance uniformity, glare control, visual comfort, ice-surface reflections and lighting flexibility.
Professional Ice Rink Lighting Designed Around Visual Performance
Ice is a highly reflective sports surface. Lighting that is simply bright enough may still create uncomfortable reflections, excessive glare or uneven visual conditions for athletes and spectators.
For this reason, professional ice rink lighting requires a more comprehensive approach.
The lighting design for KS Super Ice Factory considers the relationship between the luminaires, the ice surface and the athletes’ visual field.
Key considerations include:
Illuminance
Providing an appropriate lighting level for different sporting and operational scenarios.
Illuminance Uniformity
Maintaining a consistent lighting environment across the ice surface to reduce distracting variations in brightness.
Glare Control
Reducing direct and reflected glare that may interfere with athletes’ visual perception.
Ice-Surface Reflections
Considering the reflective characteristics of the ice surface when determining luminaire positioning, optical distribution and aiming.
Visual Comfort
Creating a comfortable visual environment for athletes, coaches, spectators and venue users.
These factors are particularly important for ice hockey and other fast-moving sports, where athletes need to track players, pucks and trajectories quickly and accurately.
Smart Lighting Control for Flexible Venue Operations
KS Super Ice Factory also incorporates a smart lighting control concept to support different operating scenarios.
A professional sports venue may be used for training during one period, recreational activities during another, and competitions or special events at other times.
These scenarios do not necessarily require the same lighting configuration.
Smart lighting control allows the venue to adjust lighting according to actual operational requirements, helping create different lighting scenes for training, daily operation, events and other activities.
The value of smart lighting therefore goes beyond remote switching.
It provides the flexibility needed for a sports venue whose operating requirements may continue to evolve throughout its lifecycle.
GESPLIGHTING: Professional Sports Lighting for Ice Sports Venues
The smart lighting system for KS Super Ice Factory was developed with the participation of Greenleader Optoelectronics (GESPLIGHTING).
As a professional sports lighting solution provider, GESPLIGHTING focuses on lighting systems for sports venues and outdoor sports facilities, with an emphasis on optical performance, visual comfort, energy efficiency and application-specific lighting design.
For ice sports venues, this means looking beyond the luminaire itself.
A successful lighting solution needs to consider the sports environment, optical distribution, installation geometry, illuminance, uniformity, glare, surface reflections and control requirements as an integrated system.
This project reflects GESPLIGHTING’s approach to professional sports lighting: designing lighting around the actual sporting environment rather than simply increasing fixture quantity or power.
Creating a More Accessible Ice Sports Experience in Changsha
The development of KS Super Ice Factory represents more than the addition of a new sports facility.
It provides Changsha with a new type of urban sports environment where professional ice sports can become more accessible to the public.
For experienced athletes, the venue can provide a new space for training and practice.
For young people and families, it can become an entry point into ice hockey and figure skating.
For the general public, it offers another way to enjoy sports and recreation throughout the year.
As ice sports become increasingly accessible, professional venues such as KS Super Ice Factory can play an important role in bringing ice sports into everyday urban life.
